What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a legal and effective medicine used for treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Administered as a sublingual lozenge, it offers rapid antidepressant effects and enhances neuroplasticity for lasting improvement. Follow this link for a handout on how ketamine assisted therapy works.

What are the steps involved?

One cycle of KAP includes the following: First, we would have at least one to several  therapy/preparation sessions (preferably on the phone or video), then a 2- 2 1/2 hour dosing session (in person, or by video ), and then at least one follow-up integration session (on phone or video). This would be considered one cycle.

Most people have 4-6 cycles.  The ketamine is in a lozenge or a dissolving tablet that you hold in your mouth and then spit out after 10-15 minutes. There are no needles or injections involved.

How do I get the medication?

You may get your ketamine through your own local provider, or I work closely with  Isha Health, an online ketamine provider, who works with clients in many different states. Some clients choose to get their medication through other online providers.

How Does Ketamine Feel?

Ketamine's effects, lasting about 45 minutes, induce a sense of detachment from the body and can lead to profound shifts in perception. Despite challenges articulating the experience, patients report clear insights and mood improvements lasting up to two weeks. Click here for an excellent description of ketamine and the brain.

How do I qualify for and get Ketamine?

Online providers like Better-U, MindBloom, and Journey Clinical can help evaluate your eligibility from a medical perspective, and will prescribe the medicine. You may also get a prescription from a local provider or your own psychiatrist. Medication is sent directly to you from a compounding pharmacy.  I work with KAP for people in Utah, California, and Colorado.

How much does KAP cost?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy is an affordable, accessible modality.   Although the medical intake and follow ups are not covered by insurance, they are eligible for out-of-network reimbursement. We will provide you with a super-bill that you can submit to your insurance to help cover part of the cost of dosing sessions and for integration and preparation sessions.  Please CLICK HERE to go to the FEES and Payments page for current fees and costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can therapeutic mentoring be combined with Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Yes, therapeutic mentoring intensives can be integrated into KAP sessions or retreats, providing deeper insights and personal growth. Full-day KAP retreats are also available both in-person and virtually for individuals, couples, or groups. These combine KAP sessions with in-person processing and therapeutic mentoring.

Do you offer in-person sessions, virtual (online) therapy, or both?

Yes, sessions are available by phone or video, with limited in-person availability in San Francisco. For KAP, both virtual and in-person formats are offered.

How long is each therapy session, and how often will I attend?

Individual sessions are typically 50 minutes; couples/family sessions may last 75–90 minutes. Weekly or bi-weekly sessions are common. Short-term therapy may be 6–12 sessions, while deeper work may take longer. Progress is reviewed regularly.

What can I expect during therapy sessions, especially my first session?

Sessions focus on you and your concerns, with a collaborative, solution-oriented approach. Expect interactive dialogue, humor when appropriate, and support that's both validating and thought-provoking.

Do you offer in-person sessions, virtual (online) therapy, or both?

I offer mostly virtual phone sessions, but in-person appointments are available in San Francisco. For KAP sessions, many begin in-person and transition to video.
